About Us
Neil and Jan Beer farm 372 hectares of Yea River flats and rolling hill country at “Cheviot Hills,” Yea.
Having produced prime vealers from F1 cows and composite bulls for 25 years, we are now focussing on growing out F1 heifers that are sold on point of calving. These Hereford/Friesian and Angus/Friesian heifers are purchased mainly privately, but some are also bought through the saleyards, usually at 10 to 12 months. They are joined only when sufficiently well grown, not at a specific age, as it is very important that they are not struggling to grow themselves at the same time as rearing their first calf. Occasionally we will also purchase other first cross heifers, such as Angus/Santa, Simmental/Friesian or Angus/Simmental.
All bulls used for joining are from the Chateau Limousin Stud at Wangaratta, as we find these bulls are well muscled, have excellent confirmation, and are also particularly quiet to handle. All bulls are selected with a low birth weight EBV.
The heifers are joined for a 9 week period and are usually available for sale in November/December, January/February, June, and August/September
All heifers are pregnancy tested in calf and are sold with a PTIC certificate issued by the veterinarian.
